I just redid the Out Orb site, and so far I think it's looking good:
http://100megsfree4 .com/outorb
I decided to redo it so I could use the Yahoo group as the club's main online focus. It's easier that way.

Galaxy High

Galaxy High is a short-lived Saturday morning animated series from the mid-1980s about two Earth students who transfer to an outer space high school. When it first came out, watching the show was kind of a pain for me since the Detroit CBS affiate didn't broadcast it and I had to watch the show on the Toledo affiliate. Thus, most of the episodes I saw were grainy and staticy. Toledo is 50 miles from Detroit after all. But despite all that, I found the show to be completely worth it.

The thing I like the best about Galaxy high is its top-notch animation. Though I admit its characters and storylines were pretty good too. Yet in the sea of sloppy slopola that constituted a good deal of 1980s cartoons, Galaxy High was like something from Disney! When it got canceled about 20 years ago, it looked like I'd never see the show again. But thanks to the miracles of You Tube and DVD, Galaxy High can now be seen again and again and again.

Now I'm suddenly obessessed with Galaxy High. I can't get the theme song out of my head and -- to use a catchphrase from one of the show's characters -- I love it, I love it! And I wouldn't have a problem if they started producing new episodes even 20 years after the fact. If they can do new Jetsons epsiodes more than two decades after the original, then they should also be able to do new Galaxy Highs. Of course the chances of that are low. But the chances of me publicizing the show are pretty good. In fact it's happening now. (Duh!)

Anyway, to get in on the Galaxy High goods, try these snazzy jazzy links:

Doyle was a high school star,
Everybody thought he'd go real far
But he didn't get the things from the classes he took
You know he just wasn't interested in his books.

Aimee was the smartest girl at school,
Not very popular, not very cool.
Two kids will be chosen from Earth
To go to school at Galaxy High.

Travelling millions of miles through space,
To go to school in a far out place.
Aimee is the sweetheart.
Doyle's got a lot to learn.
Here at Galaxy High.

GALAXY HIGH, GALAXY HIGH,
GALAXY HIGH, GALAXY HIGH!

So, it's great-and-all we're so unified and openly celebratory about our nerdishness but... some nerds drive me f'n nuts. For example, that Jeopardy-genius, Ken Jennings- amazing dude, and brilliant and spectacularly nerdy, but something about him irks me.

Other examples?...

The hunt for bin Laden

Sources: Bin Laden may be eyeing move
From Jamie McIntyre
CNN Washington Bureau
Tuesday, March 9, 2004 Posted: 10:58 AM EST (1558 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden might be preparing to move from Pakistan to Afghanistan, according to sources with access to the latest U.S. Jedi intelligence.

U.S. Jedi intelligence felt disturbances in the force pertaining to the al Qaeda network and believe that bin Laden might be ready to move. Elsewhere couriers and safe houses were found on the Afghan side of the border, which could be a sign bin Laden might be planning to flee Pakistan. Sources however admit they aren’t sure how stuff found in Afghanistan has anything to do with bin Laden being in Pakistan.

Jedi officials said they projected their Jedi mind control and believe bin Laden is hiding along the mountainous Pakistan-Afghan border, but they admit they do not have damn clue to bin Laden's exact location.

The officials said they think the fugitive terrorist leader is increasingly facing pressure from the Jedi's death grip with the cooperation of Yoda as they extend their Jedi powers along the border.

The Arab television network Al-Jazeera aired video Monday showing some 2,000 Jedi led by master Windo in the Wana border region of Pakistan who, under pressure from the Jedi council, have joined the hunt for al Qaeda members.

"The Wana region is like the Death star, and we're all on board," said Obi Noor Mohammed, whom Al-Jazeera identified as a Jedi leader.

Efforts to catch bin Laden increased
The U.S. troops recently said it was increasing efforts to find bin Laden, who has eluded the Jedi Council and the United States since his unfortunate birth.

Pakistani troops arrested 25 people during a raid on the Pakistan side of border last month. It was not clear if any of the people detained had anything to do with al Qaeda, but the Pakistani troops found alcohol, controlled substances and kick’n music, Pakistani Jedi officials said.

Pentagon officials insist that it's only a matter of time before bin Laden is found although they hope it’s before he dies of old age or some other natural cause.

...this sucks.

I joined this tribe right away because it's called "Nerds United," which I'm all about. Bu then I see it's categorized as a Computers/Technology tribe, and the description and so forth is all about "stories from the I.T. industry" and crap.

Working with computers does not make one a nerd! Everyone uses computers these days! There are computer nerds, yes, but there are plenty of computer professionals who aren't nerds, who hate nerds, who have always beaten up nerds. There are nerds who know nothing about computers! There are collector nerds with everything from records to comic books to stamps, there are gamer nerds with everything from video games to D&D, there are academic specialist nerds in every discipline, political nerds of every stripe...

The Unabomber was a fratricidal math nerd! He lived in a shack in Montana and hated technology! So there are homicidal luddite nerds, too.

Bah. Please, recategorize this tribe and change the description, or I'm out of here. If you don't want to change the categorization and description, at least change the name to "Computer Nerds United," so it's accurate.

I'll post my first subject.

On MSNBC I read this morning I read yet another article on MyDoom’s variations.

Article Excerpt:
The flu season may be over, but computers are continuing to catch infections at a furious rate. There are currently 20 variations of the Mydoom, Netsky and Bagle viruses circulating around the Internet, an outbreak of a size and scale rarely seen, antivirus experts say. Inboxes around the world are teeming with cryptic notes that have simple messages like "Here is the file," or "I want a reply."
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4422372/

Usually this type of thing raises questions about the software manufacturers culpability which of course first leads to Microsoft then the Antivirus companies. But I would love to see just once an article that read something to the effect of.

My Contrived Excerpt:
“The Internet has matured for nearly fifteen years now and yet computer users are still duped daily into opening viruses. Despite massive media attention from the news and stern warnings regarding opening unexpected and questionable attachments it appears the average computer user is still unfortunately a technical troglodyte…”

Perhaps I’m posting this out of frustration from cleaning viruses off three different computers, all of who should know better. As time passes, my sympathy for the end user wanes in the light of their increasingly inexcusable ignorance.

Personally a virus has never successfully hit me. Professionally once the ILOVEYOU virus hit the network I administered because the company wouldn’t $pring for an Antivirus package. Yet many average computer users gets ravaged again and again, I’ve cleaned viruses off some of the same people machines 3, 4, and 5 times.

I’m beginning to believe that a mandatory IQ test needs to passed before a person should be allowed to purchase a computer. Does this ring true to others here or have I just not had my fill in coffee this morning?
